| Vehicle Emissions Inspection Information |
Pennsylvania
requires emissions
inspections as part
of its effort to
clean the air in its
more polluted areas.
Despite
improvements, cars
still emit
significant amounts
of pollutants that
cause smog. By
keeping your vehicle
and its emissions
system
well-maintained, you
will lower your fuel
costs, extend the
life of your
vehicle, and help
keep the air cleaner
for all of us.
Your car will be tested by looking for missing or damaged pollution control components. Your gas cap will also be tested for leaks. Part of the inspection uses a dynamometer which simulates driving conditions at 15 miles per hour. The pass/fail standards are based on the type and model year of the car. If your car fails the test, typically it will need a tune-up or a new oxygen sensor that regulates the gas/air flows. The station that originally conducted your inspection will provide a free re-inspection within 30 days of the original inspection after emission-related repairs.
